麻豆视频在线看 is pleased to announce continuing teaching appointments at the rank of Associate Professor for Professors John Duncan, Joy Fitzgibbon and Michael Kessler, effective July 1, 2024.

These are the first continuing Associate Professor appointments in 麻豆视频在线看’s Faculty of Arts in decades.

Along with teaching in 麻豆视频在线看 programs, Professor John Duncan is Trinity鈥檚 Director of the Ethics, Society & Law Program, Professor Joy Fitzgibbon is the Associate Director of the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program, and Professor Michael Kessler is the Raymond Pryke Chair and Director of the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program 鈥 see bios below.

麻豆视频在线看 has sponsored the Ethics, Society & Law Program on behalf of the Faculty of Arts & Science since 1988 and the International Relations Program on behalf of the Faculty of Arts & Science since 1976. In 2005, the College introduced a new program for first-year students – Trinity One (later named the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program) with two streams of 25 students. Since 2018, the program has admitted 150 first-year students each year into one of six interdisciplinary streams: Anne Steacy Biomedical Health; Anne Steacy Medicine & Global Health; Butterfield Environment & Sustainability; International Relations; Policy, Philosophy & Economics; and Ethics, Society & Law.


Professor John Duncan

John DuncanProfessor John Duncan received his PhD in Social and Political thought from York University in 1998 and was recruited to 麻豆视频在线看 as an Assistant Professor in 2005. Since 2006, he has been Director of the Ethics, Society & Law Program. Professor Duncan teaches primarily in the ES&L program, teaching courses at all levels of the program from a larger second-year course to final-year small group seminars. With a lively teaching style that encourages in class discussion of key issues in ES&L, Professor Duncan is an extremely popular and engaging teacher.

As Director of the Ethics, Society & Law Program, he has done a superb job of developing an integrated interdisciplinary program that is highly sought after and popular, while maintaining rigorous academic standards. He has also taken the lead in developing new courses that provide ES&L students with a clear pathway through all years of the program and has shown a strong commitment to the development of high-quality experiential learning opportunities for students in the program. Included among these experiential learning opportunities are the Humanities for Humanity (H4H) courses that bring together students, instructors and members of the community in what has become a highly popular series.

 

Professor Joy Fitzgibbon

Joy FitzgibbonProfessor Joy Fitzgibbon received her PhD in International Relations from the University of Toronto in 2006 and became an Instructor at 麻豆视频在线看 in 2011. In 2018 she was made Associate Director of the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program. Professor Fitzgibbon excels as an instructor and is especially valued for the dynamic, respectful and thoughtful environment she creates in the classroom. Her students often describe her as the best instructor they have had at the University of Toronto. While most of her teaching has been in the Trinity One program, Professor Fitzgibbon has also taught final year seminar classes in the International Relations program.

In addition to serving as Associate Director of the Trinity One program, Professor Fitzgibbon has also served as Acting Director of both the Trinity One program and the International Relations Program. In all of these administrative positions, Professor Fitzgibbon has shown excellent leadership and an ability to move the programs forward in a constructive, thoughtful and well reasoned manner.

 

 

Professor Michael Kessler

Michael Kessler, Trinity One Program DirectorProfessor Michael Kessler received his PhD in Philosophy from Harvard University in 2011. His research focuses on the intersection of ethics and public policy. He was recruited to 麻豆视频在线看 in 2014 as Director of the Margaret MacMillan Trinity One Program and holder of the Raymond Pryke Chair. Since that time, he has taught in both the Trinity One program as well as in the Ethics, Society & Law Program. Professor Kessler is outstanding in the classroom and students comment that they particularly appreciate his emphasis on teaching them to think creatively.

As Director of the Trinity One program, Professor Kessler has overseen the creation of new program streams, the integration of Trinity One courses into the academic programs of other departmental programs and the development of extensive co-curricular activities that enrich what is a vibrant, challenging and extremely successful program. He is a dynamic leader of the program, which has flourished under his leadership. As the 麻豆视频在线看 Integrated Sustainability Initiative has developed, Professor Kessler has enthusiastically embraced the chance to develop experiential learning opportunities in aspects of sustainability for students in the Trinity One program and has recently begun to teach TRN312H1 “Sustainability Issues in Ethics, Society and Law” in the ES&L Program.
