When students move into their room at 麻豆视频在线看, they are moving into a pest-free space.
As with any shared living space, issues with pests can arise while living in residence. When this happens, the Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看 and the Facilities Department work on an individual basis with students to eradicate the issue. If you suspect that you or your community has a pest issue, you are encouraged to report this issue promptly to the Welcome Desk or the Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看.
The College checks all rooms and treats all pest-affected spaces at the College twice a year 鈥 before students move into residence and once students move out of residence.
Reporting Pest Problems
Don鈥檛 worry, 麻豆视频在线看 has an evidence-informed process for responding to a variety of pest issues. To initiate this process, follow these steps:
Pest Prevention Tips听
To prevent pests in residence, you are encouraged to:
Common Pests
Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are small, wingless bugs that feed primarily on blood. If bedbugs are present, they usually live close to the vicinity of where the 鈥渉ost鈥 sleeps. Bedbugs can鈥檛 fly or jump. Bedbugs are not a health threat and have not been shown to spread disease to humans.
Bed bugs are visible to the naked eye. An adult bedbug is approximately the size of an apple seed, flat and brown or rusty-red in colour.听 Eggs are whitish and pearl shaped, the size of a pin head and usually found in a cluster.
What are some signs of bed bugs?
When looking for evidence of bedbugs focus on the bed, mattress, linens, and the area immediately around the bed. Evidence may include:
Bites are small, itchy red bumps (typically two or three in a row), usually found around the arms and hands or upper torso. Because the bites may resemble mosquito or other insect bites, a bump alone does not mean that there are bedbugs.
What is the treatment process for confirmed cases of bed bugs? *
1.听听听听听听 The student will be provided with a room treatment schedule. Eradication requires a minimum of 2 treatments, 2 weeks apart.
2.听听听听听听 The student is required to prepare their room for treatment. The Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看 will provide the student with instructions and the necessary supplies.
3.听听听听听听 On the day of a treatment the student will be asked to vacate their room for 7-8 hours; the bed bug treatment takes 1-1.5 hours and requires 6 hours for the fumes to dissipate.
4.听听听听听听 If the bedbugs are not eradicated after two treatments, additional treatments may be required.
* We recognize that the current COVID-19 pandemic may change the above process.
Questions or concerns about pests?
Having a pest issue is stressful and getting rid of them requires diligence and patience. 麻豆视频在线看 are encouraged to communicate with the Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看 should they have questions or concerns. The Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看 and the Facilities Department are committed to work with all students to support them with all pest related issues.
Important Highlights from the 麻豆视频在线看 Community Standards
Alcohol – Just as you cannot drink alcohol out in the streets, residents are not permitted to drink or have open alcohol in the hallways, bathrooms, and other public spaces within residence鈥攖hese spaces are considered public, and as per Ontario law, individuals cannot consume alcohol there. Residents must ensure that any alcohol is kept within their rooms. No drinking games or kegs are allowed.
Smoking 鈥 麻豆视频在线看 and the University of Toronto are smoke-free campuses. Smoking of any substances in any manner is strictly prohibited within residence and on Trinity property. This includes tobacco, cannabis, hookahs, vaping, e-cigarettes, and any other form of smoking. Smokers must stand at least 9 metres away from the building exteriors and on City of Toronto property.
Noise 鈥 Residence life is social, so some noise is expected. However, residents must respect each other鈥檚 needs. Be considerate and make sure that no excessive or inconsiderate noise is being made. 麻豆视频在线看 maintains quiet hours, from 11:00 pm-8:00 am from Sundays-Thursdays and 1:00 am-8:00 am from Fridays-Saturdays.
Guests – Residents are more than welcome to bring guests into the buildings but remember that you are responsible for your guests and their actions. Make sure that they understand and respect our community standards. No guest is permitted to stay for more than three consecutive nights.
Vandalism – Vandalism and other malicious behaviour is not tolerated within residence. This includes vandalism of hallways, bulletin boards and other public spaces.
Appliances – 麻豆视频在线看 are not permitted to use any appliances with open heating elements in any residence areas except the designated kitchens. This includes hot plates, rice cookers, toaster ovens and others. Microwaves are also not allowed in the resident鈥檚 rooms.
Appliances and Fire Prevention
To avoid overloading the electrical circuit, which is a fire hazard, please limit electrical equipment in your room to computers, printers, lamps, clocks, radios, stereos, and personal styling items. In the interest of energy reduction (and fire prevention for something like a curling iron), please ensure that all electrical items are turned off before you leave your room.听 No open element hot plates, microwaves, kettles, or toaster ovens are allowed in rooms. Cooking in rooms can set off the fire alarm.
All appliances must be used inside a kitchen or kitchenette space. If you are not sure about a specific equipment, please contact the Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看.
One of the most common causes for fire alarms is popcorn in microwaves! Please be careful when cooking anything in the kitchens. Individuals and/or the residences may be charged for nuisance alarms, and more importantly, because the residence is a 鈥渉igh occupancy鈥 building, the Toronto Fire Department must send several trucks. We would never want a nuisance alarm in our residence to supersede a real alarm somewhere else.
Residents are required to participate in fire safety training at the start of the academic year. Details of this will be emailed.
Respect for the Community, its Staff, and its members 鈥 all residents are expected to abide by the Community Standards and respect any staff or individuals who are part of the College. Residents must always cooperate with staff.
Please follow these instructions to connect to the Internet.听 Your computer needs to have a network card.
Sharing of copyrighted content, excessive bandwidth use, running servers of any kind or attempts to circumvent IT policies are strictly prohibited and can result in revocation or suspension of internet access privileges.
Wireless Internet
For wireless internet access please refer to the documentation at the Information and Technology Services Website.
Wired Internet
If you would like to use your ethernet connection, you will need to provide your own ethernet cable, or they are available for purchase at the Welcome Desk at 麻豆视频在线看. The Welcome Desk also sells Ethernet/USB adaptors for students who own computers without an Ethernet port. There is an Ethernet port in every residence room, but it may be tricky to find!
Please note on your Room Inventory Checklist upon moving in if your ethernet port is damaged. If the port is damaged but still works, we may replace it throughout the year. If the jack is damaged and you cannot connect to the network, please submit a work order at the 麻豆视频在线看 Welcome Desk.
Windows
Mac OS
Download updates and reboot your computer as necessary until it鈥檚 all patched up.听 It may take a while, and you may have to do it a couple of times.
Open a web browser and go to any non-U of T website (e.g., Google, Facebook, etc.).听 You will be redirected to the registration page. Read the Usage Agreement and fill in the registration form.听 After successfully submitting the form, you will be instructed to reboot your computer.听 Then, you should be online!
Privacy
Your room is your home, and we will do everything possible to respect your privacy.听 However, it is sometimes necessary to enter rooms in case of emergencies, or for maintenance. For routine maintenance, such as fire detector testing, we will try to inform you in advance. Your room will also be checked at the end of the academic year, to determine maintenance work for the summer, to make an inventory of room contents, and to note any damages incurred over the year.
Lost Keys
麻豆视频在线看 who lose their keys should report their lost keys to the Welcome Desk as soon as possible. 麻豆视频在线看 will be charged the following fees for key replacement:
Security
We rely on security staff and cameras at 麻豆视频在线看, but all community members hold some responsibility for keeping our space safe. For your and your peers鈥 safety and security, do not prop open any exterior doors and do not let any person you do not know follow you into the residence buildings (aka “piggy-backing”).
Theft Prevention
Residents should be alert and lock their room doors whenever leaving the room, even for a few minutes. 麻豆视频在线看 assumes no responsibility for any property that is lost or stolen in residence. We advise residents to investigate possibilities for obtaining insurance coverage for their property independently or through family policy riders.
Laptops are particularly attractive to thieves. Unfortunately, people who have left their laptops unattended in the common areas, even for a couple of minutes, have sometimes had them stolen. We strongly encourage you to employ a theft prevention measure for your laptop, such as a Stop Plate: .
Room Lockouts
You will likely lock yourself out of your room at some point while you reside at 麻豆视频在线看. Here鈥檚 what to do when this happens:
Residents of St. Hilda鈥檚 College

Providing Food Service Feedback
麻豆视频在线看 is committed to providing good and healthy food at a reasonable price.
You can ask questions or provide feedback about Food Services at 麻豆视频在线看 via the following:
Room Cleaning
Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Cleaning staff regularly move through all residence spaces to provide further cleaning and emptying of waste from waste management stations located in residence. For information about how best to keep your room clean, please see Appendix A: Keeping Your 麻豆视频在线看 Residence Room Clean.
Common Area Cleaning
Hallways, washrooms, kitchens, and other common areas are cleaned by Trinity鈥檚 wonderful Facilities staff, but your cooperation is also necessary. Dirty dishes, organic waste, and smelly garbage left in washrooms and common rooms or areas create unsanitary conditions for all and can lead to pests.
Urgent Maintenance Issues
Occasionally, there may be maintenance problems such as leaks, flooding, etc. If you notice a maintenance issue that requires urgent attention, please report it immediately to the Welcome Desk 鈥 something like a leak can cause a lot of damage very quickly! If you have valuable items, you may wish to arrange for personal insurance coverage against accidental damage or theft. Please check with your family to see if their household insurance carries a 鈥渞ider鈥 for students who are living in residence (many do).
Non-urgent Maintenance Issues
For maintenance issues that do not require urgent attention (e.g. burnt out light bulb, damaged chair, ceiling fan not working), students can visit their to report a work order.
Room and Furniture Damages
Damage to the residence room and furniture provided is the responsibility of the resident. The most common damage is from posters that are taken down and rip the paint. Please use poster mounts or sticky tack for anything that you attach to your walls or doors. During the room check process in May, your residence room will be assessed and you may be held financially responsible for any damages. In common areas, damages will be charged to the House if the individuals accountable do not take responsibility.
Where to Turn for Help
As positive as we hope your university experience will be, we know that it is normal for students to encounter challenges along the way. If you run into difficulties, there is help available. Counselling, financial aid, and academic support services are offered by the College and the University. It鈥檚 best to access these resources early when problems are manageable. Don鈥檛 ever hesitate to ask for help! Your first stop for assistance can be your Don or CA, the 麻豆视频在线看 Welcome Desk or the any staff member at 麻豆视频在线看.
Families and friends are also a great support to students. We have included information on how you can achieve your goals and deal with any difficulties.
Our residences have:
Your Academic Dons
There are live-in Academic Dons who are there primarily to help you figure out how to deal with any problems or issues you may be experiencing. They are hired via selection by a committee of staff, Dons, and students. Trinity鈥檚 Dons are University of Toronto students at the graduate level.
They are there to provide leadership, counselling, academic help, and advice for residents, and can make referrals for further support if needed.
The Dons also have an important role in the maintenance of order in their residence section and encouraging individuals to avoid behaviour that negatively impacts other residents.
Your Community Advisors
The 麻豆视频在线看 Community Advisors (CAs) are undergraduate students who live in residence, and whose role is to build, promote, and maintain safe, supportive, and inclusive residence communities at the College. Through formal and informal programs, events, and activities, the CAs will support the mission of the Office of the Dean of 麻豆视频在线看 in promoting the personal and academic growth and development of students and support their transition to university and residence life. Residence students are encouraged to contact their CAs if they have fun and exciting ideas for programs and events they鈥檇 like to see in the community!
